Callers are not true spellcasters but mortals with the natural power to animate the elements to their will. So long as the element is present, the caller can manipulate it however he or she wishes. It is often claimed that callers are the offspring of fey who mated with a mortal, and histories of one-night stands, bastards, untimely death, and disappearance amongst family members does little to discredit the belief. Though it can be difficult to learn the basics, once a caller has established a groundwork in the use of his or her powers it becomes as natural as running. The use of their powers rarely causes callers to actively use manna the way true spellcasters, in painfully large sums. Instead, the calling of elements is more like vigorous exercise to the body. Exhausting, yes, but it does not forcefully expel manna from the body like spells.
